Charly Hall is a Somerset based artist working primarily in figurative oil and acrylic painting. Their practice examines image making as a site of tension between control and vulnerability, exploring themes of ownership, devotion, desire, and labour.

Working through portraiture, the figure and religious iconography, they are interested in how images carry belief, whether cultural, psychological, or constructed. Drawing on visual languages such as Catholic symbolism and art historical references, their work considers how identity, authorship, and meaning are shaped through processes of representation. These references are approached as unstable systems of signs, where performance, projection, and embodiment intersect.

Painting operates within their practice as a deliberately slow and labour intensive process, positioned against increasingly frictionless forms of image production. In this context, the painted surface becomes a space where precision, doubt, and material resistance remain visible, foregrounding the limits of realism and the instability of the image.

Recent work has turned inward, using self portraiture to explore imposter syndrome, queerness, and personal transition. Across their practice, the act of rendering is never neutral; in attempting to depict something fixed, the image shifts, becoming mediated, estranged, and contingent.

They are currently based in Somerset, working as an Art Technician, and are developing a body of work that continues to explore portraiture and the figure as a site where control, ownership, identity, and belief remain unresolved.
